DeepL is one of the best free machine translation engines you can find online for the languages it supports. The translations provided by DeepL are generally better than those of the Google NMT engine. However, Google’s NMT service made some good progress and got in some areas (e.g., technical translations) closer to the quality of the translations provided by DeepL. You can find some data about the translation quality of DeepL here. DeepL provides its service for only 30 languages, a small number compared to the over 100 languages Google Translate supports. But additional languages are continuously added. And if you are translating within the supported languages, then you should try DeepL (Trial Periods for the paid services are available).

Another great feature of DeepL is that it allows you to click on a word to get synonyms or to change word orders. This can lead to a more professional sentence or one that is easier to read.

Note (if you use the free online DeepL service): If you translate small sentences using the online interface, you should be fine. However, if you paste a large text into the source field, you need to be aware that DeepL adds the comment “Translated by DeepL” at the end of the translation. You don’t want to send your customer a file containing this comment.

Supported languages

Some supported languages are Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian, and many more.

DeepL Translator API

Recently an API was made available to implement the DeepL Machine Translation service into your software. This means, for example, that you could implement the service into your CAT tools (e.g., OmegaT, memoQ, etc.) or into WordPress plug-ins to translate websites on the fly. Update: Pricing information, as well as other information (e.g., security of your data), is now available at DeepL Pro (see the following excerpts from the DeepL Pro website).

Fair Prices – Flexible Conditions

A Pro subscription for the DeepL Machine Translation service allows you to translate 1,000,000 characters for €20. This is enough translation capacity to translate William Shakespeare’s Hamlet over five times. If you need to translate more, additional translations are billed at a simple, fixed rate. There is no minimum subscription duration and you may cancel at any time, with no minimum notice period.

Your Data is Secure

DeepL Pro never stores the texts you are translating, and the connection to our servers is always encrypted. This means that your texts are not used for any purposes other than your translation, nor can they be accessed by third parties.

As a company based in Germany, all our operations comply with European Union Data Protection laws.

Another cool thing to mention is that QTranslate now supports DeepL. That means if you can select text on websites or in your applications (e.g., CAT tools), you can use QTranslate to leverage DeepLs machine translation service.
