In an earlier post, we introduced DeepL as an excellent translation service. It is based on neural machine translation and beats Google Translate for those languages we tested. However, the service was until now only available as an online service. Only through a third-party desktop app like QTranslate could DeepL be used to translate content in other applications or browser windows. This has now changed with the DeepL Translator App.

The Application

DeepL now provides a translation application for the desktop, which works similarly to QTranslate. You can download the application directly from the homepage of DeepL. No matter which application you work with, you can select a text and get it translated by DeepL. The following shows a list of features of the latest version of the app:

  • Shortcuts – Work faster with a simple shortcut to translate any text from any app.
  • Instant insert – Quickly paste a translation back into the app you copied the original text from.
  • Glossary – Customize your translations with the right words and phrases for your context.
  • Formality – Converse with colleagues, or chat with close friends. Instantly adapt translations to fit your target audience.
  • Document translation – Save time and effort by translating an entire document with one click.
  • Alternatives – Click on any word or phrase in your translation for instant alternatives.
  • Quick translate – Quickly translate words and phrases without leaving your favorite apps.
  • Saved translations – Start translating, pause, and come back later. Save your favorite translation for easy access.

One advantage of QTranslate is that you can change its translation service (it gives you ten different services to choose from).

Other considerations

Whether you use DeepL Translator App or QTranslate, there are things to keep in mind. First, both applications need internet access because they access their respective online translation services. Second, since they access an online service, your translation goes online and can be exposed to others. So for security reasons, you should consider whether your content needs confidentiality.
